Rules

 

I – Aims

Paços’ Summer Camp Symphony Orchestra intends to serve as an internship, bringing together musicians of various nationalities, while providing ideal conditions for developing orchestral practice com high demand levels. This constitutes an added training opportunity while enabling contacts overseas, within an orchestra-related context. A top-notch orchestra entails an organization involving high-performance musicians, where the individual seamlessly blends in with the group.
Selectional rehearsals are scheduled with teachers experienced in orchestra and chamber music, with the internship to be supervised and directed by Douglas Bostock, Maestro of recognized international artistic merit.
The diversity of cultural standards, languages used, and work methodologies will all be joined by a common link: the universal language that is Music, which is further enhanced via exchanges among peers.

 

II – Date and Place of the event

Paços’ Summer Camp Symphony Orchestra will be held on the premises of Academia de Música de Paços de Brandão (Music Academy) and Europarque, from July 3rd to 9th.

 

III – Final Concert

The Grand Auditorium at EUROPARQUE will serve as the stage chosen to host the Closing Concert of the internship known as Paços’ Summer Camp Symphony Orchestra, on July 9th at 9:30 p.m.

 

IV – Organization, Artistic Direction and Orchestral Direction

Academia de Música de Paços de Brandão will be in charge of the organization and Artistic Direction, while guest Maestro Douglas Bostock will be responsible for the Orchestral Direction.

VI – Registrations and Selection Criteria

1.    Applicants shall register by filling out the registration form enclosed with these rules, and which is also made available on the website, until May 31st;

2.    Registration shall be confirmed via e-mail.

3.    Submitting the application entails the following:

  • Sending a link containing an audiovisual recording (Youtube or other) – perceptible interpretation of an instrument repertoire work or movement (with or without piano accompaniment), with unedited image and/or sound, whose quality is good enough for proper serialization. Performance time: 5 to 10 min;
  • Biographical notes (optional);
  • Proof of payment of the registration fee to be sent to the e-mail address summercamp@acadmusicapb.com, show.

4.    The recording sent, as well as a description of qualifications and experience (registration form and possible biographical notes), shall serve as the criteria used for selecting applicants;

5.   The listing of results, bearing the designation “Selected” or “Alternate,” shall be put up on the website/portal and sent via e-mail on May 29th;

6.    “Selected” applicants must confirm their presence by May 31st, along with the balance of the tuition payment, depending on the selected options;

7.    Considering the possibility of “vacancies” opening up, “Alternate” applicants, where applicable, must make known their interest in taking part in the Internship;

VIII – Teachers

Paços’ Summer Camp Symphony Orchestra will be assisted not only by guest maestro Douglas Bostock, but also by teachers who will be responsible for group and section rehearsals.

Briefly explained, teachers will be divided as follows:

STRINGS

  • One teacher for each group of Violins (I and II);
  • One teacher for each group of Violas, Cellos and Double Basses;

WOODWINDS

  • One teacher for each section of Woodwind and Brass instruments (with the possibility of specific guidance according to the kind of instrument).

PERCUSSION

  • One teacher assisting the percussion group

Not only is every group, section and assisting teacher in the Paços’ Summer Camp Symphony Orchestra knowledgeable in teaching practice, but they also have vast experience in orchestral and chamber music work.

 

IX – Accommodation and Transportation

1.    Accommodation is provided by a 4-star (4*) hotel in Santa Maria da Feira, in double rooms, with breakfast included. Any damage to or additional food and drink purchased at the hotel shall be the sole responsibility of committing said damage or making said purchases;

2.    Organizers shall provide travel from the Hotel to the Internship venue (and vice-versa);

3.    Upon arrival, on July 3rd, transportation shall be provided from Porto Airport, via Espinho Train Station, to Academia de Música de Paços de Brandão;

4.    Upon departure, on July 10th, to Porto Airport, transportation shall be provided from the hotel to the Airport, via Espinho Train Station;

5.    Participants shall be solely responsible for expenses for personal travel not considered under items 2, 3 and 4.

 

X – Planning of Rehearsals

Internship work, which will take place on a daily basis with the full-time Maestro, comprises group rehearsals and full rehearsals.

Rehearsals will take place at Academia de Música de Paços de Brandão, in Paços de Brandão – Santa Maria da Feira (www.acadmusicapb.com), Portugal.

 

XI – Activities

1.    On top of the Final Concert, chamber music groups are expected to be set up. Students interested in being part of these latter groups shall state such fact on the registration form;

2.    Outdoor leisure activities that shall be included comprise a visit to iconic sites in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, along with a beach excursion.

 

XII – Pagamento

1.    Registration Fee – A payment of 150€ shall be made.
Make sure the bank transfer states the name of the applicant. Applicants whose registration has been refused shall be refunded this amount.

2.    Tuition Fees
Options:

  • Orchestra (with breakfast and dinner): 270 €.
  • Orchestra (with breakfast, lunch and dinner) and Hotel: 430€.
  • Payments, to be made via bank transfer, shall include the applicant’s identification and the selected meal/accommodation option.

3.    Insurance

The organizers’ insurance covers all participants; however, students must each have their own health insurance, covering personal accidents or illness.

 

XIII – Certification

Every student shall receive a participation diploma.

 

XIV – Final Provisions

1.    Private audio or video recordings of the Internship will not be permitted, as such rights shall be reserved to the Organizing Committee, which shall use said recordings for dissemination purposes and for an indefinite period;

2.   It shall be incumbent on Organizers to resolve any cases omitted from these rules..
