Douglas Bostock
The British conductor Douglas Bostock is Music Director of the Argovia Philharmonic in Switzerland (2001-). He was Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Carlsbad Symphony Orchestra in the Czech Republic (1991-1998). He has also served as the Principal Guest Conductor of the Czech Chamber Philharmonic (1993-2011) and Regular Guest Conductor of the Munich Symphony Orchestra (2002-2006). Douglas Bostock was Principal Conductor of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra (2000-2006), and thereafter their Principal Guest Conductor (2006-2010). Furthermore he is Music Director of the Hallwyl Opera Festival in Switzerland (2003-). His repertoire covers a wide range of repertoire from the Baroque to the present day, including all standard works, as well as many rarely performed works, contemporary music and opera.
Douglas Bostock has appeared extensively with leading orchestras in most countries on the European continent, as well as in the USA, Canada, Mexico and Asia. Guest conducting engagements in the UK include the BBC orchestras, the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, and Royal Scottish National Orchestras. In Europe he has conducted the Munich Symphony, the orchestras in Jena, Halle, Erfurt, Århus, Ålborg, Odense, Brno, and Bratislava, the South Jutland Symphony, the North German and Southwest German Philharmonic Orchestras, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Prague Symphony, amongst many others. On the American continent guest appearances include the National Orchestra Washington, the orchestras in Chicago, Kansas, Colorado, Calgary and Mexico. In Japan Douglas Bostock has conducted the New Japan Philharmonic, Nagoya Philharmonic, Kyoto Symphony, Japan Century, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Gunma Symphony, and Geidai Philharmonia. Moreover, in recent years Douglas Bostock has been increasingly active as an opera conductor. He has appeared at many renowned international festivals and in the prestigious concert halls worldwide, as well as broadcasting for radio and television.
A prolific recording artist, Douglas Bostock has nearly 100 CDs to his name, reflecting his diverse expertise in music of all styles, and including many less well-known and previously unrecorded works. His major recording cycles of the complete orchestral music of Carl Nielsen and the symphonies of Robert Schumann as well as the extensive British Symphonic Collection have won particular international acclaim.
Douglas Bostock enjoys working with young musicians and is frequently invited to conduct at music colleges in Europe and Asia. He has been Guest Professor in the conducting and opera faculties at the Tokyo University of the Arts, and is Visiting Professor at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Japan. His conducting master classes in many countries enjoy great popularity.
